We are proud to announce that the Świna Tunnel in Świnoujście has been recognised as one of the five best infrastructure projects in the European Union. The European Commission and the Committee of the Regions have recognised this project for its innovation, social significance and sustainability, selecting it from among 266 projects across the EU.
The fixed link between the islands of Usedom and Wolin, which opened on 30 June 2023, has completely transformed transport in the region. The tunnel provides fast, convenient and weather-independent access to Świnoujście, eliminating the need to use the ferry crossing.
It is not just an impressive structure – it is a symbol of the connection between people, places and opportunities.
For Lafrentz Polska, this is a unique project and a source of great satisfaction.
As part of the Lafrentz–Sweco consortium, we acted as Consultant/Contract Engineer, taking responsibility for the following key areas:
🔹 supervision of design work and construction works,
🔹 optimisation of safety systems and future operations,
🔹 coordination of contractual activities through to the final settlement of the project.
The tunnel, which is 1,780 metres long – 1,484 metres of which were excavated beneath the riverbed – was constructed using a massive TBM with a 12-metre-diameter cutterhead, which the locals have christened ‘Wyspiarka’.
This project demonstrates that Polish engineering can compete with the best in Europe.
Although the project was completed in 2023, its success – including its European success – continues to inspire and highlight the scale of the achievement.
